1682 - Frenchman Robert De LaSalle founded Louisiana and claimed it for King
Louis XIV of France.
  
Early 18th century - French settlers arrive in Louisiana
Mid 18th century- france transferred administrative control to spain. German
settlers along with Irish and Scottish settlers inhabited the area, becoming
one
of the most influential "melting Pots" of American history,
but still the largest group "the acadians" who were fleeing to the
area for the next 20 years were remain the the thriving force of the community.
1717 - Bienville sent plans to France for the port city of "Nouvelle
Orleans" which
was promptly turned into the flourishing city of New Orleans. The first importation
of African slaves.
1755 - "Acadians" expelled from Nova Scotia by the British.
1803 - Napoleon sold Louisiana to the United States, who reacquired the colony
from Spain just in time to seal the deal.
1812 - The louisiana purchase was cut up into smaller territories, transforming
it into its present day boundaries.
1831- 1840 The American economy caused Rapid Growth
1901 - Discovery of Oil in Jennings brought in jobs and promoted the
idea residency from outsiders. Increasing americanization.
1865 - 13th amendment prohibits slavery.
1870 - 14th amendment prohibits denying the right to vote on account
of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.
1916 - mandatory education act - this act made english the only allow language
at all schools
